01 — What's new

New research, in plain English

Picked from each morning's update, with this morning's finds first: studies in people, popular treatments, big trials and FDA news.

The day in longevityFriday, October 30

The clearest step today is a vaccine that trains the immune system to clear old, worn-out cells, which in aged mice improved blood sugar and liver fat and raised median lifespan by 12%, though the study was small. A second report found the same kind of vaccine improved metabolism and extended lifespan in several mouse models. Separately, restoring a fat in muscle energy factories reversed some muscle wasting in mice, with a link to aging also seen in human muscle samples. All of this is early, animal-based work.

Vaccine that targets old cells extends median lifespan 12% in aged mice, a small early study

Researchers in China made a vaccine that trains the immune system to find and clear old, worn-out cells that have stopped dividing and give off harmful signals, which build up with age. In mice, it lowered signs of these cells in fat, improved blood sugar handling and liver fat, and in naturally aged mice vaccinated at 75 weeks it raised median lifespan by 12% compared with untreated mice. This was only in mice, with 10 per group, and the comparison mice were relatively short-lived, so it is an early proof of concept that needs more rigorous studies.

  1. Lab study in miceAdvanced science (Weinheim, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany)Vaccine against aging cells improves metabolism and extends lifespan in mice, early study findsResearchers built a vaccine that trains the immune system to find and remove senescent cells, old cells that have stopped dividing and can harm nearby tissue. It also helped restore the function of aged immune cells that are needed for the vaccine to work. In several mouse models of aging, it cleared these cells from fat tissue, improved metabolism and extended lifespan. This was only in mice, so it does not show the vaccine would help people, and it is a proof of concept for this kind of treatment.Found Oct 29, 2026 · published Oct 28, 2026Read →
  2. Lab study in mice and human muscle samplesNature agingLosing a muscle energy-cell fat mimics aging in mice; restoring it reversed some damageMitochondria are the cell's energy factories, and their membranes contain a fat called cardiolipin that declines with age. When researchers lowered it in young mice, their muscles showed key signs of aging, including a shift in muscle fiber types. Restoring it in adult mice started to reverse muscle wasting and fully prevented early death. The work was in mice, with the link to aging also seen in human muscle samples, so it points to a possible target rather than a treatment for people.Found Oct 29, 2026 · published Sep 29, 2026Read →

06 — Longevity tests

Longevity tests, side by side

These tests estimate how old your body seems, or how fast it is aging, from a finger prick, a cheek swab or a blood draw. People use them to see where they are starting from and to track changes over time.

Results are estimates. The science behind them is still settling, and two tests can give the same person different numbers.

Three ways tests measure aging

DNA methylation clocks

Chemical tags on your DNA shift as you age. A clock reads thousands of them and estimates a biological age.

$249–$499finger prick, at home · cheek swab, at home

What the research shows so farStrong for large groups of people. Less certain for one person tracked over time.

Antibody glycans

Sugar chains attached to your antibodies change with age and inflammation. A newer approach with a smaller research base.

$499finger prick, at home

What the research shows so farPromising research, with fewer independent studies so far.

Blood biomarker panels

Standard lab measures like blood sugar, cholesterol and inflammation, sometimes combined into an age score.

What the research shows so farEach marker is well studied. Combined age scores are less so.
